About Malawi
Malawi is a landlocked country situated in the southeast of Africa with a population of 16 677 547 with almost half living in extreme poverty on an income of less than $1.00 a day. Although it is small in size as compared to other countries, it boasts as one of Africa’s natural splendors having the continent’s third largest freshwater and second deepest lake going 700 meters deep below sea level after Lake Tanganyika.
Having been under the British colonial rule for decades, eventually power was relinquished to President Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda who dictated the country for 30 years until 1994. Since then, Presidential power has changed hands four times under democracy, and Malawi still remains mainly an agricultural country with underdevelopment in many parts of the country. HIV/AIDS, poverty, illiteracy, drought and natural disasters such as floods which kill hundreds of people and leaving thousands homeless, continue to choke development being implemented by the new authorities. Drought and floods have impacted the price of agricultural produce and excess livestock mortality keeping the country in the loop of aid all the times.
